The Government of Sierra Leone has introduced interim administrative measures to ensure continuity in the operations of local councils led by the All Peoples Congress (APC), amid an ongoing political impasse.

According to an official communication dated April 2, 2026, the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, with approval from the Ministry of Finance, has authorized Chief Administrators to assume expanded financial responsibilities within their respective councils.

Under the new directive, Chief Administrators will now serve as a signatories, granting them the authority to approve and execute financial transactions on the Public Financial Management Smart System (PFMSS). This role, typically reserved for political heads of councils, has been temporarily reassigned to prevent disruptions in service delivery.

The government says the move is a necessary administrative intervention aimed at maintaining the smooth running of essential local services, including sanitation, revenue collection, and community development programs.

Officials note that the decision was prompted by a prolonged political deadlock affecting APC-led councils, which has hindered normal governance and financial operations. By empowering administrative heads, authorities intend to safeguard public interest and ensure that council functions continue without interruption.

While the measure is described as temporary, it underscores the growing tension surrounding local governance and the need for a resolution to the ongoing political situation.

No official timeline has been given for when normal leadership structures will be restored.
