The Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Party, Sheriff Barrie, has shifted focus toward strengthening electoral credibility and political dialogue, warning that Sierra Leone’s democratic future hinges on transparency and cooperation among key stakeholders.
During a recent engagement with the Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone, Edmond Sylvester Alpha, Barrie called on President Julius Maada Bio to take the lead in fostering inclusive discussions with the opposition All People’s Congress (APC), stressing that sustained engagement is vital to maintaining national stability as the country approaches the 2028 elections.
At the heart of his message was a strong appeal to the newly appointed head of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Edmond Alpha, urging him to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. Barrie emphasised that public confidence in the Commission will depend on its ability to deliver elections that are free, fair, and widely accepted across the political divide.
He noted that millions of citizens are placing their trust in the ECSL to ensure a credible outcome-one that satisfies both the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party and the APC. According to him, the Commission’s performance in the lead-up to 2028 will be a defining test of the country’s democratic institutions.
Drawing on the biblical reference John 8:32, Barrie underscored the role of truth, honesty, and accountability in governance, particularly in the management of elections.
He further pointed to Senegal as a model, highlighting its track record of elections that have generally earned acceptance from competing political actors.
Barrie concluded by cautioning that Sierra Leone stands at a pivotal moment, where deliberate efforts toward dialogue and electoral integrity will determine the strength and stability of its democracy moving forward.
