First Lady Fatima Bio has called on outspoken and extreme members of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) to tone down their approach and prioritize unity, warning that internal divisions could undermine the party’s strength.

Speaking at the official launch of the SLPP Bonthe District Party Office, Mrs. Bio stressed that cohesion remains vital for the party’s continued progress. She also urged the opposition to respect President Julius Maada Bio’s legacy, adding that the President deserves time to rest after years of national service.

“When President Maada Bio sleeps, he needs to sleep and snore,” she said, acknowledging his dedication.

The First Lady further noted that President Bio has consistently extended a hand of peace to the opposition All People’s Congress (APC), reminding them that Sierra Leone belongs to all its citizens.

On internal party matters, Mrs. Bio affirmed that Jimmy Batilo Songa remains the duly recognized chairman of the SLPP, urging members to accept the outcome of party elections and move forward.

“People say SLPP has this and that problem within the party. The only time SLPP has a problem is during lower-level elections. After lower level, any serious politician will move on, whether you like the outcome or not. Jimmy Batilo Songa is the chairman, and the journey ahead of us is the most important journey,” she said.

She clarified that her role was not in contention, adding: “The competition we went to at Bintumani was not between me and Jimmy Batilo. My face no dey the ballot paper. I am begging everyone to drop it and move on. The SLPP is more powerful and stronger when we are together.”

The First Lady concluded with an appeal to party members to set aside their differences and unite, reiterating that unity is the SLPP’s greatest asset.
