The Inspector General of Police, Mr William Fayia Sellu, officially launched the Hon. Mathew Nyuma Trophy 2026 in Kenema on Saturday, drawing large crowds and marking a spirited start to one of the region’s most anticipated youth football tournaments.
A packed stadium witnessed an entertaining opening match between Kallon FC and Ngombulago FC, a fixture that delivered a competitive and thrilling display while setting a high tempo for the tournament. Fans cheered throughout the game, applauding both teams for their skill and determination.
The presence of the IGP underscored the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to youth engagement and community development initiatives. He was accompanied by Madam Matilda Doris Sellu, President of the Police Wives Association, whose attendance highlighted the role of family and community structures in supporting policing efforts and social advocacy.
This year’s tournament is being held under the theme “Say No to Drug Abuse, Work to Feed Salone,” a campaign aimed at discouraging substance abuse among young people while promoting hard work, productivity, and self-reliance. Organizers used the platform to reinforce positive messaging and encourage youths to engage in constructive activities.
During the ceremonial kick-off, the IGP and Madam Sellu interacted with players, match officials, and spectators, emphasizing the values of unity, discipline, and resilience both on and off the pitch. Their engagement reflected a broader strategy of using sport as a vehicle for peacebuilding, youth empowerment, and stronger ties between law enforcement and local communities.
Organizers say the Hon. Mathew Nyuma Trophy will continue beyond the opening weekend as a platform for talent development and community outreach. Through structured sporting opportunities and consistent anti-drug messaging, the tournament aims to keep young people engaged in positive pursuits while strengthening social cohesion across Kenema and surrounding districts.
