The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has affirmed the critical role of public awareness, timely reporting, and effective communication in improving disaster response and management across Sierra Leone.

This message was delivered during the Civic Day Series held in Kamakwie, Karene District, on April 14, 2026, where the Agency engaged citizens and stakeholders on its mandate and operations.

Presenting on behalf of the Agency, Deputy Director General Sulaiman Bandajuma Sowa outlined the NDMA’s responsibility in protecting lives and property during emergencies. He emphasized that successful disaster management depends largely on how well citizens communicate with the Agency.

Mr. Sowa stated that when individuals approach the NDMA with concerns, they should clearly explain the nature of the situation. According to him, this helps the Agency to better understand the problem and respond in an appropriate and timely manner.

He further stressed that in cases of emergencies, accidents, or disasters, the NDMA should be among the first institutions contacted. He noted that early reporting allows for faster intervention, improved coordination, and more efficient delivery of assistance to affected communities.

The Deputy Director General also called on residents to increase their awareness of the Agency’s work and to actively cooperate with disaster response efforts aimed at safeguarding communities.

His presentation highlighted public cooperation, preparedness, and prompt communication as essential elements in strengthening national disaster resilience.

The Civic Day Series in Kamakwie brought together citizens, government representatives, and various institutions to discuss development issues, public service delivery, and citizen participation in governance.
