The government of Sierra Leone has announced that the nation will celebrate its 64th Independence Anniversary on Monday, April 27, 2026.
In line with the observance of this significant event, Monday, April 27, 2026, has been declared a public holiday across the country.
The declaration follows a previous announcement by the government that Sierra Leone will observe its 65th Independence Anniversary on Monday, 27 April 2026, under the theme: “Building a Responsive, Resilient and Cohesive Sierra Leone.”
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Press Secretary at State House in Freetown on Thursday, 23 April 2026, this year’s celebrations will be marked in a modest but meaningful manner, in line with directives from His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio.
As part of the commemoration, an interfaith service will be held at State House on Monday, 27 April 2026, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The service is expected to bring together religious leaders and citizens in a shared moment of unity, gratitude, and reflection on the nation’s progress since independence.
The statement further encouraged nationwide spiritual observances ahead of the main event. Muslims across the country have been invited to offer prayers for Sierra Leone and its people on Friday, 24 April 2026, while Christians are encouraged to do the same on Sunday, 26 April 2026.
The public is urged to take note of the holiday and participate in the various activities that will mark this important milestone in Sierra Leone’s history. The government encourages all citizens to reflect on the nation’s progress and unity as part of the celebrations.
