The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) celebrated its 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee, marking its status as one of Sub-Saharan Africa’s oldest political parties with a firm call for internal cohesion ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.
Led by President Julius Maada Bio, the jubilee brought together party members, supporters, and dignitaries to reflect on the SLPP’s extensive history. The celebration served to honor the founding members who shaped the institution’s legacy while acknowledging the party’s current responsibilities in national governance.
Following the evening’s festivities, First Lady Fatima Maada Bio issued a statement emphasizing that the milestone was an opportunity to reflect on both the party’s triumphs and the difficult moments it has endured. Looking forward, she heavily focused on the necessity of political solidarity to secure the SLPP’s future and protect the legacy of President Bio.
“The unity displayed last night is a clear demonstration of our readiness, cohesion, and shared focus as we look toward the 2028 presidential elections,” the First Lady wrote.
She issued a direct appeal to the party’s base to resolve any internal conflicts that could threaten their political stronghold.
“To my fellow SLPP members, let us remain united, bury the hatchet, and refrain from holding on to past grievances,” she urged. Framing this solidarity as an impenetrable defense, she added, “Our strength lies in our togetherness, and as long as we stand united, no opposition can prevail.”
The First Lady concluded her message by rallying supporters around the party’s enduring national mantra: “One People, One Country.”
