The Sierra Leone Police have carried out a coordinated operation to tackle persistent traffic congestion and safety concerns along Goderich Street, one of the busiest roads in Freetown.

The operation was led by Chief Superintendent of Police Jenevieve Tity Cowan, Local Unit Commander of the East End Police Division, with support from the Traffic Department, Operations Unit, Operational Support Division (OSD), and the Community Relations Department (CRD).

For several years, parts of Goderich Street have experienced severe congestion caused by indiscriminate parking and roadside trading. Commercial drivers operating from areas including Kingtom, New England, Murray Town, and Congo Town had reportedly turned sections of the road into informal parking spaces, obstructing both vehicles and pedestrians.

Police said the situation created major safety risks, with several accidents recorded as a result of overcrowding and reduced road space. Pedestrians were said to be among the most affected, often forced to move through narrow spaces between vehicles.

Thursday’s operation focused on clearing obstructions, removing unauthorized parking, and restoring the free flow of traffic along the affected corridor.

The intervention was welcomed by drivers, commuters, and nearby business operators, many of whom described it as a timely move to improve road safety and mobility.

In a related development, the Divisional Traffic Officer, Chief Inspector Sembu Victor Joe Kamara, met with executives of drivers’ unions to discuss wider traffic management and security concerns within the division.

The meeting was also attended by the Divisional Operations Officer, DSP Septimus Siaka Vandi, and the Officer Commanding the Community Relations Department, DSP Elizabeth Serah Williams.

Discussions reportedly focused on strengthening cooperation between the police and transport stakeholders, while encouraging greater compliance with traffic regulations.

The Sierra Leone Police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining public order, improving road safety, and ensuring efficient traffic management across the municipality.
