The British High Commission Freetown has issued a public statement distancing itself from comments allegedly attributed to UK diplomats in an article published by the Global Times, stating that it was “surprised” to read the publication and had not been contacted by the newspaper on the matter.

In the statement released by the British High Commission in Freetown, the mission said at no point did the Global Times approach the Commission regarding the comments cited in the article.

“The British High Commission in Freetown was surprised to read an article in the Global Times citing comments allegedly made by UK diplomats,” the statement read.

The Commission further emphasized the importance of the relationship between the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone, particularly in relation to travel and cooperation between the two countries.

According to the statement, the UK government values its partnership with Sierra Leone and considers travel between both nations as important to sustaining bilateral ties.

The Commission also referenced the recent introduction of e-Visas aimed at simplifying the visa application process for Sierra Leonean travelers seeking to visit the United Kingdom.

“The UK values the partnership with Sierra Leone and travel between our two countries is crucial to maintaining our partnership, including through the recent launch of e-Visas to streamline the application process for Sierra Leonean applicants visiting the UK,” the statement noted.

Addressing concerns surrounding visa procedures, the British High Commission stated that all visa applications are assessed individually and in accordance with UK immigration regulations. The Commission maintained that the UK visa system is intended to support legitimate travel while also protecting the integrity of the country’s borders.

The statement added that the United Kingdom remains open to applications from Sierra Leone and is committed to ensuring that the visa process remains fair, consistent, and professional.

“All applications are assessed based on their individual merits, in line with our immigration rules, and the UK visa system is designed to facilitate legitimate travel while maintaining the integrity of our borders. We welcome applications from Sierra Leone and are committed to a fair, consistent and professional process,” the Commission stated.

The statement comes amid public discussions generated by the reported comments referenced in the Global Times article, with the British High Commission seeking to clarify its position and reaffirm its commitment to continued cooperation with Sierra Leone.
