The Chief of Defence Staff of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), Lieutenant General Amara Idara Bangura, on Monday hosted British Field Marshal Lord David Richards at Cockerill Barracks on Wilkinson Road in Freetown, where both military leaders discussed security cooperation, leadership and emerging defence technologies.

The meeting, held on the morning of Monday, May 11, 2026, was described as an important engagement aimed at strengthening the long-standing defence relationship between Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom.

According to information from the meeting, the discussions provided an opportunity for the two leaders to exchange views on issues relating to military leadership, regional and international security cooperation, as well as new developments in defence technology.

The engagement also reaffirmed the enduring partnership between the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone in the area of defence and security collaboration.

Lord Richards’ visit to Sierra Leone was said to carry special significance, particularly because of his involvement during a critical period in the country’s history in 2000, when British military support played a key role in stabilisation efforts during the civil conflict.

The visit also focused on future cooperation between both countries in support of peace, stability and the development of professional armed forces.

Officials noted that the United Kingdom remains committed to working closely with Sierra Leone in strengthening the country’s security sector and deepening the long-standing military partnership between the two nations.

The meeting at Cockerill Barracks forms part of continued bilateral defence engagements between Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom aimed at promoting regional stability and institutional military development.
