The Government of Sierra Leone has unveiled fifty newly procured electric vehicles for the launch of a new youth-focused commercial transportation initiative aimed at creating jobs, promoting innovation, and supporting environmentally friendly transport across the country.

The vehicles were inspected by Ibrahim Sannoh at the Water Quay Bolloré Terminal in Freetown as part of preparations for the upcoming “Youth in Commercial Transportation” programme.

Speaking during the inspection, the Minister said the initiative is designed to introduce an Uber-style ride-hailing service that will provide employment opportunities for young people while modernizing the country’s transportation sector through the use of electric vehicles.

He stated that the programme is intended to empower youths to become economically self-reliant by giving them access to commercial transportation opportunities in a growing digital mobility sector.

According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the initiative is also expected to create both direct and indirect jobs for young people, including opportunities for drivers, vehicle operators, technicians, and other support services connected to the transport industry.

Minister Sannoh further noted that the introduction of electric vehicles reflects the government’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development, adding that the project aligns Sierra Leone with modern global trends in environmentally friendly transportation.

The “Youth in Commercial Transportation” initiative is expected to officially commence operations following the completion of operational and logistical arrangements for the deployment of the vehicles.
