The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) National Chairman, Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, is in mourning following the death of his father, Alhaji Mohamed K. Songa.

An official announcement from the party’s grassroots media team confirmed the passing of the elder Songa, who is being remembered as a respected patriarch and a pillar of quiet strength within his community.

The late Songa reportedly passed on Saturday, May 23, 2026. While details regarding the cause of death was not immediately released, the SLPP National Grassroots division released a heartfelt tribute describing Alhaji Songa as “a man of quiet strength.” The statement highlighted his role in instilling the values of “Discipline, Humility and service to the people” in his children, particularly the current National Chairman.

“He raise a son who now stands at the helm of our Party’s leadership, but more importantly, he raise a Man grounded in the values of our forefathers,” the tribute read.

Alhaji Mohamed K. Songa is survived by his son, Chairman Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, who ascended to the leadership of the SLPP in 2025 after a long career in public administration and diaspora organizing . Chairman Songa has been described by President Julius Maada Bio as a “battle-tested” leader with a proven track record of loyalty and discipline.

In a notable display of national unity, condolences have poured in from across the political spectrum.

John F. Kamara (JFK), a political figure from the opposition, extended his sympathies to the Songa family. In a public statement, Kamara noted his personal connection to the family as neighbors in the Aberdeen Crescent area.

“In Sierra Leone today, our differences must never be stronger than the bonds that unite us as one people,” Kamara said. “In this moment of grief, we stand with the Songa family and offer our heartfelt condolences.”

The SLPP National Grassroots described the loss of their Chairman’s father as one that makes them feel “orphaned in part.”
