Manager of the Public Health Laboratory at the National Public Health Agency (NPHA), Doris E.F. Harding, has assured the public that Sierra Leone’s laboratory systems remain fully operational and capable of diagnosing epidemic-prone diseases.
Speaking at the Government Weekly Press Conference on Tuesday 26 May 2026 at the Miatta Civic Center, Harding stated that laboratories in Kenema, Makeni and Freetown are currently active and functioning effectively.
She explained that the facilities are equipped with the necessary technology and trained personnel required to detect infectious diseases and support national outbreak response efforts.
According to Harding, Sierra Leone’s laboratory infrastructure has the technical capacity to identify the Ebola strain currently reported in Congo, despite reports that the strain has no available vaccine.
She further disclosed that government and development partners continue to collaborate to strengthen laboratory services and improve the country’s overall disease detection and response systems.
Harding assured citizens that the country’s laboratory network remains prepared to support national public health interventions whenever necessary.
