The Chairman and Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, Edmond Sylvester Alpha, has welcomed a high-level delegation from the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC), with both institutions reaffirming their commitment to strengthening collaboration and implementing recommendations aimed at promoting peace and national cohesion in Sierra Leone.
The delegation, led by Hawa Samai, paid a courtesy visit to the ECSL, where Mr. Alpha commended the Peace Commission for what he described as its continued efforts in consolidating peace and cohesion across the country. He also acknowledged the Commission’s role in coordinating the activities of the moral guarantors.
Speaking during the engagement, Mr. Alpha affirmed the importance of strengthening partnership and collaboration between the ECSL and the Peace Commission. He further called for a review of the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions in order to reinforce their working relationship and improve cooperation on key national issues.
The ECSL Chairman also provided the delegation with a synopsis of the implementation process surrounding the tripartite recommendations, assuring the ICPNC delegation of the ECSL’s commitment to ensuring the recommendations are effectively implemented.
Responding on behalf of the delegation, Madam Hawa Samai commended the ECSL for what she described as progress made in implementing the tripartite recommendations. She also expressed the Commission’s willingness to continue collaborating with the ECSL and welcomed the proposal to review the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the two bodies.
Madam Samai further encouraged the ECSL to become more proactive in the media and communication space in order to strengthen public awareness and engagement on electoral and peace-building matters.
The meeting concluded with both institutions agreeing to establish a technical committee that will coordinate partnership arrangements, activities, and programs between the ECSL and the ICPNC as part of efforts to deepen cooperation and advance national cohesion initiatives.
According to the update from the ECSL, the engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by both institutions to strengthen institutional collaboration in support of peace, democratic governance, and national unity in Sierra Leone.
