President Dr. Julius Maada Bio on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, presided over the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ahmed Saybom Kanu, and assured the ministry’s leadership of his continued support in achieving its goals and objectives.

The ceremony, held at State House in Freetown, marked Mr. Kanu’s formal assumption of office following his appointment by the President and subsequent approval by Parliament.

Administering the oath, Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Civil Service, Prince E. O. Cole, informed President Bio that Members of Parliament had duly vetted and approved Mr. Kanu’s nomination after his appointment by the President.

Mr. Cole further stated that the ceremony was being conducted in accordance with Section 57 of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991, to enable the Deputy Minister to officially enter upon the duties of his office.

Mr. Kanu subsequently took the oath of office and pledged to faithfully discharge his responsibilities as prescribed by law.

Speaking after taking the oath, the newly sworn-in Deputy Minister expressed appreciation to President Bio for the confidence placed in him and for granting him another opportunity to serve in government.

“It is not easy to be given a second chance to serve. I am deeply honoured by this appointment and committed to working diligently to justify the confidence the President has placed in me,” Mr. Kanu said.

He also highlighted the strong working relationship he shares with the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, noting that their cooperation would help advance the President’s vision for the sector.

While acknowledging the challenges facing the fisheries sector, Mr. Kanu said ongoing reforms and the commitment of the ministry’s leadership would contribute to meaningful progress and improved outcomes for the people of Sierra Leone.

Congratulating the Deputy Minister on his appointment, President Bio thanked Members of Parliament for what he described as their diligence in reviewing and approving the nomination.

The President noted that Mr. Kanu was experienced in public service and governance and therefore understood the responsibilities associated with his new position.

President Bio also reiterated his commitment to supporting the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources and expressed confidence that the Minister and her Deputy would work together effectively to deliver results that address the aspirations and needs of Sierra Leoneans.

The swearing-in ceremony forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership and improve service delivery within the fisheries sector, a key area of the country’s economic and social development agenda.
