During the Weekly Government Press Conference held on 9th June 2026, at the Miatta Civic Center, the Minister of Energy, Cyril Arnold Grant, addressed growing public concerns over frequent power outages particularly in Freetown, and outlined the government’s plans to improve electricity generation and distribution.
The Minister explained that recent blackouts were largely caused by seasonal reductions in water levels at the Bumbuna Hydroelectric Dam and the annual maintenance of one of its turbines.
He noted that Bumbuna is currently generating about 10 megawatts of electricity, while alternative sources such as Karpowership and thermal plants are supplementing the national grid.
Mr. Grant announced that President Julius Maada Bio is expected to commission a completed 30-megawatts solar power project at Newton, which will include a 15-megawatt-hour battery backup system to strengthen electricity supply in the Freetown network. He also revealed that an additional 20-megawatts solar project at Benguema is underway.
“Without power, we know we will not get investors to come and invest, build industries, and create employment for our people,” he said.
The Minister further highlighted progress on the Nant Energy Project, which is expected to generate 60 megawatts of power in the first quarter of 2027 and eventually increase to 108 megawatts later that year. He emphasized that the project will significantly improve power reliability, especially in the Wellington and eastern parts of Freetown.
Additionally, the government plans to expand the Bumbuna Hydroelectric Project through a new donor-supported investment expected to add 50 megawatts of electricity generation capacity. The project aims to maximize the use of water resources currently underutilized during the rainy season.
While acknowledging existing challenges within the transmission and distribution network, the Minister expressed confidence that ongoing investments in generation, substations, transmission lines, and grid infrastructure will gradually deliver more stable electricity across the country.
