Sierra Leone’s national football team, Leone Stars, concluded their two-match international friendly series against Liberia with both sides recording one victory each, bringing the series to an even finish.
The Leone Stars secured a hard-fought 1-0 win in the first leg at the Southern Arena in Bo. The match marked Sierra Leone’s first top-tier international fixture on home soil in over five years. Abdul Jarju Kabia emerged as the hero of the encounter, netting the decisive goal in the 66th minute to seal a memorable victory in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
However, Liberia responded strongly in the return leg at the S.K.D. Sports Complex in Monrovia, where they recorded a convincing 3-1 win to level the series. The result ensured that both teams shared honours across the two fixtures.
The matches provided an important assessment period for the national team under caretaker coach John Keister, who also serves as the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Technical Director. Keister supervised the squad throughout both games and is expected to present a comprehensive technical report to support a smooth transition for the incoming head coach.
Newly appointed Leone Stars head coach, Didier Gomes Da Rosa, was present at both fixtures, allowing him to closely evaluate the players ahead of officially assuming his role. He is set to begin preparations immediately for Sierra Leone’s upcoming AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.
With the team now back in Sierra Leone, focus shifts to the future as the new coaching staff begins work in earnest. The Leone Stars are scheduled to commence their AFCON 2027 qualification journey in September 2026
