President Julius Maada Bio has undertaken an inspection tour of key heritage, tourism and environmental sites across Sierra Leone, reaffirming his government’s commitment to preserving the nation’s history, promoting sustainable tourism, and protecting its natural resources.
The tour covered three significant destinations: Bunce Island, Leicester Peak, and Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary’s Innovation Centre.
A major highlight of the visit was the President’s trip to Bunce Island, marking the first visit by a sitting Sierra Leonean President to the historic site in four decades. Located in the Sierra Leone River, Bunce Island remains one of West Africa’s most significant historical landmarks and a symbol of the transatlantic slave trade.
During a guided tour, President Bio received briefings on the island’s role as a British slave trading post and inspected remnants of the former slave fortress, including holding cells and defensive structures. He also reflected on the island’s historical connection to descendants of enslaved Africans in North America, particularly communities in the United States with ancestral ties to Sierra Leone.
In a symbolic gesture, the President laid a wreath in honour of the thousands of Africans who passed through the island during the slave trade, describing it as an important site for remembrance, education and reflection.
The President later visited Leicester Peak Viewpoint, where he inspected the recently upgraded tourism facility alongside Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Nabeela Tunis. The site, which offers panoramic views of Freetown and the Atlantic Ocean, forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s tourism sector.
Commending the Ministry of Tourism for the transformation of the facility, President Bio emphasized the importance of proper maintenance to sustain its appeal to visitors. He noted that investments in tourism infrastructure are vital for job creation, local economic growth and promoting Sierra Leone’s natural beauty on the global stage.
At the Tacugama Innovation Centre, the President inspected ongoing construction of a modern facility aimed at advancing tourism, environmental conservation, education and creativity. The project will include a green park, observation tower, greenhouse, visitor centre, hiking trails, amphitheatre, canopy walk and recreational spaces for children.
Once completed, the centre will also feature a cinema, library, studio, rooftop cafeteria, exhibition halls and meeting facilities, making it a multi-purpose hub for learning and recreation.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress of the project, President Bio described the Innovation Centre as a transformative initiative aligned with Sierra Leone’s sustainable development goals.
He also issued a strong warning against land encroachment and illegal activities in protected conservation areas, stressing that the government would take firm action against violators.
The inspection tour underscores the government’s broader strategy of leveraging Sierra Leone’s historical heritage, tourism potential and environmental resources to drive economic growth, strengthen national identity and create opportunities for future generations.
Main improvement: I changed some repetitive phrases, improved readability, and made it sound more like standard newspaper copy. Overall, your original version was solid.
