Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, David Moinina Sengeh, has arrived in Cairo to participate in the inaugural “AI and Human Development” closed-session meetings hosted by the United Nations at Al-Azhar University.
The high-level discussions are focused on developing an outcome document that will shape the United Nations’ approach to leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool for accelerating human development globally.
Speaking on Sierra Leone’s participation, Sengeh said the country has valuable experiences to share, particularly in education, healthcare, and governance, as it advances its digital transformation and innovation agenda.
He highlighted Sierra Leone’s National Innovation and Digital Strategy (2019–2029), describing it as the foundation of the country’s ambition to position itself as an AI-driven nation.
“Sierra Leone is an AI Lab,” Sengeh stated, emphasizing the government’s vision of harnessing technology and innovation to improve public service delivery and advance human development.
During the meetings, the Chief Minister is expected to engage with global leaders and innovators, including Deputy UN Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, and Graça Machel, founder of the Graça Machel Trust and UN SDG Advocate.
The engagement forms part of Sierra Leone’s broader efforts to contribute to global conversations on responsible AI development and the use of emerging technologies to address social and economic challenges.
