A resident of Koinadugu District has lodged a formal complaint against police officers operating what he describes as an illegal checkpoint at Malaforia Village, accusing them of extortion and disregarding presidential directives.
Sulaiman Daffae, who shared his experience with Sierraloaded, reported that he was compelled to pay NLe 200 at the checkpoint without lawful justification. He specifically named Inspector Denkeh as the officer allegedly collecting money from citizens at the unrecognized checkpoint.
“It is deeply troubling that despite repeated public concerns and directives aimed at improving policing standards, certain officers continue to engage in practices that undermine public confidence in the police force,” Daffae stated.
The complainant expressed concern about what he described as disappearing discipline within some sections of the force, raising questions about accountability and professionalism at the Malaforia checkpoint.
Daffae noted that His Excellency the President had publicly instructed the Inspector General of Police to dismantle all illegal checkpoints nationwide. He questioned what actions the Local Unit Commander and Officer Commanding Division in Kabala are taking to address the situation.
“The continued existence of unauthorized checkpoints suggests either a lack of supervision or a failure to enforce established directives,” Daffae said.
He called on the Inspector General of Police, Regional Police Commander, and district leadership to urgently investigate the operations at Malaforia Village.
“Public trust in the police can only be restored when officers are held accountable and when presidential directives are respected and implemented without exception,” Daffae added.
The complaint comes amid broader concerns over police conduct at checkpoints across Sierra Leone, with civil society voices having previously raised alarm about alleged extortion and harassment at security posts nationwide
