President Dr Julius Maada Bio, on Sunday, June 28th 2026, led mourners in paying their final respects to the late Honourable Justice Nyawo Finda Matturi-Jones, joining the bereaved family, members of the Judiciary, government officials, traditional leaders, and community members at a solemn funeral service held in her honour.

The President’s presence underscored the nation’s recognition of Justice Matturi-Jones’ immense contribution to Sierra Leone’s justice sector and her enduring legacy as one of the country’s most respected jurists. Throughout the ceremony, tributes highlighted her decades of dedicated service, marked by integrity, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.

Justice Matturi-Jones, a retired Supreme Court Judge, was celebrated as a trailblazer in Kono District, where she made history as the first female lawyer and the first female judge. Her groundbreaking achievements opened doors for countless women aspiring to careers in law, leadership, and public service.

In addition to her judicial accomplishments, she played a vital role in national development, serving as Chairperson of the Judicial Tribunal in 2021 and as the inaugural Chancellor of the Kono University of Science and Technology. Her leadership and service earned her widespread admiration and left a lasting imprint on Sierra Leone’s legal and academic landscape.

Family members, in their remarks, expressed deep gratitude to President Bio for his compassion, support, and solidarity during their time of mourning. They commended him for standing with them and for honouring the life and legacy of their beloved matriarch.
