Sierra Leone’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr Michael Imran Kanu, has been unanimously elected Chair of the 59th session of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), marking a significant diplomatic achievement for both the ambassador and Sierra Leone.
Dr Kanu will preside over the Commission’s annual session at the United Nations Headquarters from June 29 to July 10, 2026, where representatives from member states will deliberate on key issues relating to international trade law and legal reforms.
As Chair of the session, Dr Kanu will oversee discussions on the adoption of new international trade law instruments, review the progress of UNCITRAL’s various working groups, and guide deliberations on the Commission’s future legislative agenda. The session will also consider measures aimed at strengthening technical assistance and capacity-building initiatives for developing countries.
His unanimous election reflects the confidence of UNCITRAL member states in his leadership and diplomatic experience, while underscoring Sierra Leone’s growing contribution to international legal and multilateral affairs.
UNCITRAL is the United Nations’ principal legal body responsible for promoting the harmonisation and modernisation of international trade law. Its work supports the development of predictable and transparent legal frameworks that facilitate global commerce and cross-border investment.
Dr Kanu’s appointment places Sierra Leone at the forefront of discussions shaping the future of international commercial law and highlights the country’s expanding role within the United Nations system. Under his leadership, the 59th session is expected to focus on advancing consensus among member states and strengthening the international legal framework governing global trade.
