The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has cautioned residents of Port Loko District to prepare for risk of disasters as the peak of the rainy season approaches, with climate change continuing to intensify extreme weather events.
Speaking to Radio Advocacy, the NDMA Regional Coordinator, Khalil Sheriff Kabba, said the most common disasters expected during the rainy season include flooding, windstorms, and thunderstorms, particularly in July and August when rainfall is at its highest.
Kabba identified Bakhdad Community in Port Loko as one of the areas most vulnerable to flooding due to its landscape and drainage challenges, urging residents to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
“Mostly in the rainy season, the expected incidents are windstorms, flooding and thunderstorms. The Bakhdad community is prone to flooding because of its landscape, especially during the months of July and August,” Kabba told Radio Advocacy.
His warning comes as concerns continue to grow over the impact of climate change, which experts say is contributing to more frequent and intense rainfall across Sierra Leone, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying communities.
The NDMA is encouraging residents to avoid blocking drainage channels, heed weather advisories, and work collectively to reduce disaster risks as the country enters the peak rainy season.
The agency says community preparedness and public awareness remain key to minimizing the impact of climate-related disasters and protecting lives and property across Port Loko District.
