A staff member of the University of Sierra Leone (USL), Mr Dunnoh Yovonie, has alleged that he was physically assaulted by a police officer while returning home along Low Cost Old Road in Freetown.

Speaking to Born 2 Blog, Yovonie, an Information Technology professional employed as a webmaster at the University of Sierra Leone, said the incident occurred while he was travelling in a commercial tricycle, commonly known as a keke.

According to his account, a Sierra Leone Police vehicle bearing registration number SLP 077 drove closely behind the tricycle and nearly collided with it. He said he reacted by telling the officers, “Is that the way you people drive? You nearly hit us.”

He alleged that the police vehicle immediately overtook the tricycle and blocked its path before several officers approached the vehicle.

Yovonie further claimed that one of the officers, whom he described as a fair-complexioned police inspector, slapped him several times without provocation. He also alleged that the police vehicle involved is attached to the Operational Support Division (OSD) Headquarters.

The alleged incident has sparked concerns over the conduct of some law enforcement officers and the treatment of civilians during police encounters.

As of the time of publication, the Sierra Leone Police had not issued an official statement responding to the allegations. The claims remain those of the complainant and have not been independently verified.
