Fifteen Chiefdom Youth Councils across Sierra Leone have received grant funding to design and implement self-led development initiatives aimed at promoting youth empowerment and decentralised governance.
The financial cheques were presented in Lungi, Port Loko District, as part of national commemorations marking International Youth Day 2026. The funding is provided under the Youth Action for Good Governance and Self-Reliance (YAGGS) project.
The handover was attended by the Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs, the Minister of Planning and Economic Development, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, and ActionAid Sierra Leone’s Head of Business Development and Communication.
Three councils received the cheques on behalf of all 15 beneficiary councils: Kaiyamba Chiefdom Youth Council in Moyamba District, Kholifa Rowalla Chiefdom Youth Council in Tonkolili District, and Koya Zonal Youth Council in Western Area Rural District.
The grants are funded by the European Union in Sierra Leone and implemented by the Centre for Coordination of Youth Activities (CCYA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs.
The funding will enable the youth councils to design and implement recreational, livelihood, entrepreneurship and digital initiatives, creating opportunities for economic empowerment among young people in the beneficiary communities.
Officials at the event said the initiative is designed to establish a sustainable framework for grassroots self-reliance by positioning young people not only as beneficiaries but also as active leaders in driving development and economic transformation within their communities.
