The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security has called on the management of Sunbird Bioenergy (SL) Limited and workers’ representatives to engage in dialogue following the company’s announcement of a temporary shutdown of operations.
In a public notice, the Ministry said it had been informed of a notice issued by Sunbird Bioenergy to its employees regarding the temporary suspension of operations.
While acknowledging the operational and financial difficulties reportedly facing the company, the Ministry said the decision should not have been communicated to workers without prior consultation with the Ministry and the relevant workers’ union.
The Ministry described the approach as unacceptable and called for the matter to be addressed through social dialogue and consultation.
It urged the company’s management and workers’ representatives to exercise restraint and continue constructive engagement towards an amicable resolution of outstanding labour-related issues.
“The Ministry remains committed to protecting workers’ rights, promoting social dialogue and maintaining industrial peace,” the notice stated.
The Ministry’s intervention comes as efforts continue to resolve the labour-related concerns arising from the company’s decision to temporarily shut down its operations.
