The appointment of AIG Hillary Sao Kanu as the first female Regional Police Commander for Sierra Leone’s North West Region has been welcomed as a significant milestone in advancing women’s leadership and representation in the country.
The Executive Director of Women in Governance, Port Loko District, Mrs Rugiatu Neneh Turay, and members of her organisation on Thursday, August 20, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to AIG Sao Kanu at her office in Port Loko to welcome her to the region and express solidarity with her as a woman leader.
Mrs Turay described the appointment as an important achievement for women, noting that it demonstrates growing opportunities for women to occupy strategic leadership positions across Sierra Leone.

She also pointed to the implementation of the 30 per cent quota for women’s representation in governance as a positive development, expressing hope that the policy would be fully implemented across institutions nationwide.
Responding, AIG Sao Kanu welcomed the delegation and said the visit demonstrated the importance of collaboration between women in leadership and governance.
She stressed that women should have opportunities to serve at every level of institutions, including administrative, middle-cadre and junior positions, while underscoring the importance of the 30 per cent quota.

The Regional Police Commander also pledged her full support to programmes and initiatives advanced by Women in Governance, assuring the organisation of her willingness to collaborate with them to promote women’s participation and leadership.
She further welcomed members of the organisation to engage with the Regional Police Command whenever necessary.
The engagement concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening women’s leadership, participation and representation in governance and public institutions.
