The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly condemned the recent security breach in Freetown, Sierra Leone, which have caused significant disruption to peace and order in the country.

In a statement issued on Sunday, November 26, 2023, ECOWAS expressed its grave concern about the events that unfolded in Freetown, including an attack on a military barracks and the subsequent imposition of a nationwide curfew.

The regional bloc called for the swift arrest and prosecution of all those involved in the disturbances, emphasizing its unwavering commitment to upholding democracy and constitutional order in Sierra Leone.

“ECOWAS reiterates its zero-tolerance for unconstitutional change of Government,” the statement read. “We condemn any attempt to undermine the democratic process and destabilize the peace and security of Sierra Leone.”

ECOWAS further pledged its continued support to the government and people of Sierra Leone in their efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen democratic institutions, and promote sustainable development.

The regional bloc urged all stakeholders in Sierra Leone to exercise restraint, refrain from violence, and work together to restore normalcy and stability to the country.
