Makeni is not powerless — it’s being denied power by calculated neglect by central government and silence of local authorities in governance.

This city continues to be at the mercy of a state that has chosen to ignore its cries for justice and equity.

The social infrastructure of this metropolitan, especially energy supply, has been intentionally crippled — not just by the central government but also by officials elected to defend ordinary citizens.

Councillors (Bombali District/Makeni City Councils) and MPs from this region have sat comfortably as our people are robbed of basic amenities.

Let’s not forget: Four years ago, a standby generator meant to support electricity supply was forcefully removed – a betrayal that echoes louder than any blackout you can imagine.

That decision by central government and the silence of local representatives didn’t just dim lights of Makeni — it took six lives and left others permanently injured. To this day, no one has been held accountable.

Fast forward to now — power supply for Makeni, Bunbuna and Magburaka has been slashed from 6MW to 3.5MW; and again, silence from those in council chambers and well of parliament.

Even worse, they seem to be working hand-in-hand with the same central authorities that have failed the people of this region repeatedly.

Is this governance or betrayal?

Makeni, like many other communities, has become a political pawn. The only time the ordinary people are matter is during elections — when rogue and deceptive politicians dressed in sheep’s clothing roam every nook and cranny pretending to care. But when the votes are cast, they turn into serpents, feeding off people’s silence and suffering.

Civil society? Mute.
The media? Deeply divided.

The question remains: who will stand for the common man and woman now?
