Guaranty Trust Bank SL Ltd (GTBank) has issued a strong rebuttal against a “spurious” social media post circulating online.
The post alleges that the Bank of Sierra Leone (BSL) is poised to shut down GTBank’s operations due to alleged falsification of accounts and conspiracy.
In a notice released today, May 6, 2025, the Bank categorically stated that the claim is “completely false and is designed to bring the image of the Bank and its officers to disrepute.”
GTBank emphasized that while it would not engage in public disputes with every media report, it “will not hesitate to pursue legal action for defamation against our brand or for inaccurate reporting.”
The Bank moved to reassure the public of its unwavering commitment to ethical practices. As a “industry leader with more than twenty years of operation in this esteemed country,” GTBank stated it “adhere[s] to strong corporate governance and strictly comply[ies] with both national laws and the policies set forth by our regulators,” including the BSL.
GTBank strongly urged its customers and the general public to “completely disregard this unfounded allegation.” The Bank reiterated its commitment to “maintaining the highest ethical standards and will never partake in any unethical practices.”
The notice concluded with a message of gratitude to the public for their “continued support and trust.”
The notice was issued by Corporate Communications of Guaranty Trust Bank SL Ltd on May 6, 2025.

As a former employee of Guaranty Trust Bank Sierra Leone (GTBank), I feel compelled to firmly denounce the false and malicious social media posts circulating about the bank’s alleged closure by the Bank of Sierra Leone. These claims are baseless, reckless, and designed purely to tarnish the reputation of one of Sierra Leone’s most reputable financial institutions.
GTBank Sierra Leone has, over the years, consistently upheld the highest standards of professionalism, corporate governance, and financial integrity. The bank has been at the forefront of driving innovation in the banking sector, introducing cutting-edge digital banking services, and enhancing customer experience across the country.
Beyond its operational excellence, GTBank has played a critical role in Sierra Leone’s economic development, providing financing for small businesses, supporting large-scale infrastructure projects, and contributing significantly to financial inclusion through its wide network and community initiatives. The bank has also been a key employer, providing hundreds of Sierra Leoneans with professional growth opportunities, fostering talent, and upholding a strong code of ethics among its staff.
It is regrettable that social media has been weaponized to spread such damaging falsehoods against an institution that has earned the trust of customers, regulators, and international partners alike. I stand in full support of GTBank’s rebuttal and urge the public to reject these defamatory narratives and recognize GTBank for the trusted and responsible institution it has always been.
Guaranty Trust Bank Sierra Leone remains strong, resilient, and committed to serving the people and economy of Sierra Leone with integrity. Samuel Boyle Jones
