U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations, Committee and Chris Coons (D-el)  have issued an immediate release on MCC Decision to reselect Sierra Leone for Potential future Compact Agreement on December 14, 2023.

The Joints statement revealed that Sierra  Leone has been reselected for a potential future Compact agreement, but there is still considerable work to be done by the Sierra Leone government adding that the actions they take in the forthcoming months and years will be crucial in determining the final outcome.

The Immediate Release Reads “After the flawed elections in June, Sierra Leone’s government and the primary opposition party have made significant commitments that are essential but initial steps in a much longer process to restore confidence in Sierra Leone for a potential Future Compact agreement, there is still considerable work to be done by Sierra Leone’s government and its political leaders to meet all the required eligibility criteria. The actions they take in the forthcoming months and years will be crucial in determining a final outcome, including whether the U.S. Congress will approve an MCC Compact with Sierra Leone,”

In a recent Facebook response, Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh affirmed that the government welcomes news of MCC reselecting Sierra Leone for Compact Development. He acknowledges  the conditions, and  assure their USG partners that the government is fully implementing the Agreement for National Unity within law.
