Lebanese TV Presenter, Ricardo Karam has urged the international community and foreign embassies in Lebanon to assist and support domestic workers and migrants from Sierra Leone and other countries.
“In Lebanon, the ongoing war has caused immense suffering for its citizens and brought to light the dire situation of the country’s migrant domestic workers,” Karam said. “Many of these workers, from countries like Kenya, Philippines, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone and Bangladesh are now trapped in a war zone, abandoned by their employers and left without resources or safety nets.”
The TV Presenter said that most of these migrant workers are without passports making leaving nearly impossible.
“Many are forced to remain, exposed to escalating violence,” he said. He added that most of these migrants wish to return home but financial barriers are making it impossible.
He expressed his solidarity with the migrant domestic workers calling on humanitarian organizations to support them with evacuation to their home countries.
“Their plight is a human tragedy that demands immediate action from the international community and support from each one of us,” he said.
The war in Lebanon has seen a surge in the number of casualties as the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) continues to bomb the capital Beirut and south of the country.
The Lebanese Health Ministry said that 22 people were killed on Saturday with over 100 injured in the country.
The bombings targeted the Shia-dominated community of Bachoura.
