The Government of Sierra Leone and Elcome have agreed to extend free high-speed internet access for all registered users at the University of Sierra Leone’s Fourah Bay College (FBC) until the end of April.

The partnership, established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on January 30, 2025, aims to provide fast internet services to 13 universities across the nation, encompassing a total of 24 campuses. Following the launch of the initiative at FBC just one week ago, it was reported that over 450 students have successfully registered and connected to the service.

Elcome initially offered complimentary internet coverage until the end of March. However, understanding the importance of online resources for students preparing for their exams, a few students voiced their concerns about the timeline. In response, the Gem AI Assistant engaged with Elcome representatives, advocating for an extension of the free service.

Reportedly, the request was met with enthusiasm, and Elcome has graciously agreed to prolong free internet access through April, allowing students to take full advantage of online study materials and resources as they prepare for their assessments.

This initiative is believed to underscores the commitment of both the government and Elcome to enhance educational opportunities and access to information technology in Sierra Leone, particularly in challenging times.

Students have been encouraged to utilize the valuable resource to support their studies ahead of the upcoming exams.
