The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has reported a rise in pupil entries for the 2025 National Primary School Examination (NPSE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) compared to the previous year.

According to the latest data provided by the MBSSE, 171,099 pupils have registered for the 2025 NPSE, up from 164,383 in 2024. Similarly, 129,838 pupils have enrolled for the 2025 BECE, an increase from 125,877 in 2024.

The Education Ministry said that the growth reflects ongoing efforts to expand access to education nationwide.

Registration for both exams officially closed on February 27, 2025.

The NPSE marks the inaugural public examination organised by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) specifically for primary school pupils in Anglophone West Africa. This important exam is typically conducted on Saturdays, occurring approximately one month before the onset of the wet season.

The BECE is the second public examination conducted by the WAEC for students moving on to senior secondary school in Anglophone West Africa. This examination symbolizes a crucial milestone in the educational journey of pupils, as it serves as their initial qualification recognized in the professional realm.
