Smart Start Academy for Science and Technology joined the global celebration of International Day of Mathematics on March 14th, 2024.

The event, held on the school campus, brought together students from various schools, principals, educational stakeholders, community leaders, parents, and the press.

Abdulai Ibharim Massaquoi, Principal of Smart Start Academy, emphasized the purpose of the event: to commemorate International Day of Mathematics with the theme “Playing with Math.” The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of mathematics in solving real-world problems and was established by UNESCO’s 40th General Conference in 2019.

Principal Massaquoi highlighted the role of mathematics in critical areas like artificial intelligence, climate change, energy, and sustainable development. He also mentioned the connection to Pi Day, celebrated on March 14th due to Pi being approximated to 3.14.

Mr. Massaquoi stressed the importance of International Day of Mathematics in educating students about the value of mathematics and its impact on improving quality of life. Additionally, the day strives to empower women and girls and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda.

The principal acknowledged the common fear of mathematics among students. He expressed hope that the celebration would foster a love for the subject. He encouraged students to pay attention in math class and develop an appreciation for it.

Thomas Vandy Sannoh, Chairman of the Conference of Principals in the Pujehun District and Principal of SSTVSS Gobaru, commended Principal Massaquoi for introducing the International Day of Mathematics celebration to the district. He emphasized the crucial role of mathematics in students’ lives, applicable in daily situations both in school and at home.

Mr. Sannoh proposed incorporating the celebration into the district’s annual calendar. He emphasized that fostering a love for math requires a collaborative effort from the government, teachers, parents, and students themselves. He urged teachers to adopt engaging teaching methods, encouraged parents to provide the necessary learning materials, and inspired students to develop a passion for mathematics.

Josephine Farma, Deputy Head Girl of Smart Start Academy, expressed gratitude to the principal and stakeholders for organizing the event. She shared that she used to be afraid of math but now takes pride in her ability to solve problems. She encouraged fellow students to embrace math, calling it a “good and simple” subject.

The International Day of Mathematics celebration at Smart Start Academy demonstrates the school’s commitment to promoting STEM education and inspiring a love for math among its students.
