Our WCW today goes to Mrs. Bernadette Cole.
Bernadette Cole attended St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Sierra Leone and obtained a Division 1. She attended Sixth Form at St. Edwards Secondary School May Park, Kingtom, and topped with a Bachelor of Arts in English, History and International Relations, Fourah Bay College, USL. She furthered bagged a Master of Arts with distinction in Journalism from the University of Wales, Cardiff.
Bernadette has beautiful career as she rose through the ranks and making achievements despite gender bias during her prime. She worked as a Correspondent for the London based West Africa magazine from Freetown, Sierra Leone. She also worked at the Ministry of Information as Information Officer, rose to the position of Principal Information officer.
Mrs. Cole also became the former Public Relations Officer of the University of Sierra Leone, where she established the Mass Communication Department at Fourah Bay College for the training of journalists. This department has created and helped shaped many popular figures in the society, given hope to many who wants to pursue career in the path of journalism, and also help build the future of the country’s future generation.
Bernadette went on to serve as head of the Department from 1993 to 2009. She also served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Fourah Bay College from 2009 to 2013. In 2014, she was appointed as Director of Alumni and International Relations of the University of Sierra Leone which is position she still holds.
Mrs. Cole is the author of “Mass Media, Freedom and Democracy in Sierra Leone “, one of the History text books in use in the Mass Communication Department at Fourah Bay College.
She is married to retired Solicitor General of the Sierra Leone Judicature, Mr. Tunde Cole and are blessed with children – Avril Tundette Cole, an International lawyer living in Canada and Barton Cole, a civil engineer.
