Lansana Sherif, better known as ‘Steady Bongo’, was a remarkable individual with a quiet demeanour and a warm, friendly personality. Despite being soft-spoken, he brought electrifying energy to the music stage with his performances that captivated audiences.

He was somebody I had eagerly wanted to meet, as a fan of his songs and somebody who I had been listening to religiously when I was growing up. Fortunately, we met during the Voice of Democracy Icon Singing Competition as we contacted his musical band to play at the finals. He held my hand very firmly, shook it, and smiled. “Finally, I have met you Sulaiman Stom Koroma the voice I always like listening to on Radio Democracy”. He said. I was not only surprised but also baffled hearing a legend saying that to me, it was a blessing not in disguise but in reality.

He was a musical virtuoso whose legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of many. Rising to prominence in Sierra Leone’s music scene in the early 80s, his talent and passion for music captivated audiences far and wide. His iconic song “Ready Before You Go Married” not only became a chart-topper but also laid the foundation for numerous hit songs that followed. His ability to connect with listeners through his music made him one of the most cherished and consistent artists of our time. Renowned for his consistency in delivering chart-topping hits year after year, Steady Bongo’s artistry spread and was loved everywhere.

His presence as a judge in the Voice of Democracy Icon Singing Competition added depth to the event, laying bare his commitment to musical excellence. Steady Bongo’s cheerful spirit and willingness to collaborate shone through in his interactions with us during rehearsals. His dedication to consulting on standards and ensuring a polished performance for the competition affirms his professionalism and passion for music.

Steady Bongo’s approachable nature and genuine friendliness left a lasting impression on me and others around him. Lansana Shefir’s legacy will be remembered for his quiet strength, infectious joy, and unwavering dedication to our music industry.
