The Ministry of Health and Sanitation in Sierra Leone made an important announcement on Saturday, May 20, 2023. That a team of surgeons successfully performed the first-ever minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries in the country.

This remarkable achievement involved the use of Xen implants as a groundbreaking treatment for glaucoma.

The ministry emphasized that this medical team’s efforts signify a significant innovation in the field. They are committed to changing lives by preserving eyesight and are dedicated to this mission.

Glaucoma is a chronic eye condition characterized by increased pressure within the eye that can damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss or blindness if left untreated. The primary goal of glaucoma treatment is to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) to prevent or slow down the progression of the disease

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS): MIGS procedures are newer surgical techniques that are less invasive compared to traditional surgeries. They involve implanting small devices or creating microscopic incisions to improve the outflow of fluid from the eye.
