The Chairlady of Abacha Street Traders, Jatu, has been reported dead. Her death was made public by the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr through the social media platform, Facebook.

The Chairlady, popularly known as Yayo, was seen as a motherly figure to both young and old traders and hawkers of the central business district of Freetown.

Reacting to the news, Aki-Sawyerr described the late woman as a “hardworking Chairlady and a ‘dear friend'”.

Tributes have been pouring in since her death was announced public with one young male trader recalling his good experience with the late woman.

That woman believed in me and gave me goods to hawk so that I could pay my fees,” the trader, identified as Mohamed Conteh, recounted.

Another tribute from a certain Momoh Kamara thanked the late woman for her service as a Chairlady for the traders while praying for her soul to find eternal rest.

Meanwhile, the family and of the late woman and traders of Abacha Street are preparing to lay her to rest.

Abacha Street is the busiest unorthodox market in central Freetown. The street is lined up with shops, stores and hawkers from dawn till dusk.The market has been a significant player in local politics, often taking on a controversial role. Hawkers and traders tend to align themselves with political figures who advocate for their presence and interests in the area.
