One confirmed case of anthrax has been detected in Makallay Chiefdom, Bombali District following the death of a cow in one of the “worrehs”.

A-Z Newspaper reported that the laboratory test conducted at the Ministry of Agriculture facilities in Makeni on Friday showed that the cow died of anthrax.

According to the Social Mobilization Coordinator in Makeni, they have held community engagement meetings in Makallay explaining to cattle rearers and community members the dangers of the contagious disease.

We have warned them to report to the nearest health center if they start getting symptoms such as severe headaches. vomiting or respiratory difficulties”, Amadu Kamara, adding that they have also been warned about the precautionary measures that should be taken to prevent the spread of the virus.

He noted that any suspected sick animal should not be touched with bare hands but rather report to the relevant authorities for needful to be carried out.

He said the Ministry is aware that cattle rearers can not do without their animals considering that these animals are the main source of revenue or livelihood for most people in that part of the country. He called on them to apply the precautionary measures they have been taught to prevent themselves as well as their animals.

He said for a long time, the virus had not surfaced in the Bombali district although it had been detected in other parts of the country.

However, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has been officially notified about the confirmed case and frantic effort is currently being made to put the situation under control.
