A women’s advocacy group, Female in Africa, has accused the All People’s Congress (APC) of gender discrimination following the detention of grassroots women’s leader Zainab Sheriff.
In a statement circulated on social media, the organization described the opposition party as a “disgrace to women in Sierra Leone” and called for Sheriff’s immediate release.
The group alleged that the APC leadership has not demonstrated the same level of public support for Sheriff as it previously did for Lansana Dumbuya, who was detained on similar allegations.
According to Female in Africa, Dumbuya’s detention sparked visible solidarity efforts from party members, including public demonstrations and vocal calls for his release. The organization claims that comparable backing has not been extended to Sheriff, whom it described as a committed party member and active grassroots mobilizer.
The advocacy group urged the APC to uphold fairness and ensure that female members are not marginalized, particularly during politically sensitive periods.
Using the hashtag ”LeaveNoWomanBehind,” the statement framed the issue as part of a broader concern about the inclusion and protection of women in political spaces.
The statement also included commentary on the political activities of Joseph Kamara, noting that those remarks reflected the organization’s independent views.
As of the time of publication, the APC had not issued an official response to the allegations.
Further developments are expected as reactions emerge from party officials and other stakeholders.
