The Management of Bo Regional Hospital has announced the temporary closure of its mortuary from August to October 2026 to allow for essential maintenance, expansion and upgrading works.
Medical Superintendent Dr Yusuf Sheku Tejan said the project will address longstanding challenges, including limited cold-storage capacity and congestion, while improving the facility’s capacity, safety, hygiene and dignity in the handling of human remains.
Upon completion, the upgraded mortuary will also be equipped to conduct post-mortem examinations, reducing the need for families and authorities to transport bodies to Freetown for such services.

During the closure, the hospital will only accept corpses originating from the hospital for a maximum of 24 hours before they are collected. Families requiring storage beyond 24 hours have been advised to make alternative arrangements with Columbia Davies Memorial Funeral Parlour along the Bo-Koribondo Highway in Bo City.
Mortuary Manager Emmanuel Moinina said the rehabilitation will include renovation of existing structures, expansion of cold-storage facilities, improved drainage and ventilation, upgraded office spaces and waste-management systems, as well as refurbishment of waiting and viewing areas for bereaved families.
He explained that the existing facility, which was constructed several years ago, has become outdated and inadequate due to the increasing number of bodies requiring storage, resulting in frequent congestion and pressure on the infrastructure.
The expansion and renovation are expected to provide a long-term solution and enable the mortuary to better serve Bo Regional Hospital and the wider Southern Region.
Hospital management has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure and appealed to families, funeral homes, community leaders and other stakeholders for patience and cooperation. It said further updates on the progress of the works and the resumption of full mortuary services will be communicated as the project continues.
