A tragic incident occurred at the Mobi EDSA transformer station on Monday, December 9, 2024, claiming the life of 12-year-old Melvin, who was electrocuted while retrieving a container.

Melvin, an apprentice at a motorbike garage and a recent arrival from Liberia, was known for collecting used motorbike oil containers.

According to eyewitnesses, the young boy ventured to the unsecured transformer station around 11:45 AM to retrieve one of his stored containers. In a tragic turn of events, he came into contact with live electrical equipment, resulting in his untimely death.

Fellow apprentices revealed that Melvin had been cautioned numerous times about the dangers of storing items near the transformer station, which has been left without proper security measures.

The incident underscores growing concerns about the safety of EDSA facilities, particularly the need for immediate action to secure the Mobi transformer station. The absence of a door at the station’s entrance has left the facility exposed, posing a significant risk to the community, especially children.

Melvin’s body has been taken to the Bo mortuary as authorities and community members call for stricter safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
