A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 months in prison after stealing money from his girlfriend in Calaba Town, in a case that also involved charges of economic abuse under Sierra Leone’s Domestic Violence Act.

Magistrate John Manso Fornah of Pademba Road Court No. 2 handed down the sentence to Suliaman Suba Kanu, who pleaded guilty to two counts: larceny contrary to the Larceny Act of 1916 and domestic violence in the form of economic abuse contrary to the Domestic Violence Act of 2007.

According to the particulars of the offence, the defendant on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at 47 Robis Road in Calaba Town, Freetown, stole the sum of 40,000 Leones belonging to Lamarana Jabbie, with whom he was in a domestic relationship.

Prosecutor Sergeant 9811 Wilson informed the court that Kanu was a first-time offender.

In a plea for mitigation, the defendant begged the court for mercy and appealed for a lenient sentence.

Magistrate Fornah, having considered the prosecutor’s submission, the convict’s plea, and the amount of money stolen, sentenced Kanu to 12 months imprisonment on the larceny charge and 12 months on the economic abuse charge.

The magistrate ordered that both sentences run concurrently, including time already spent in detention.
