Amid escalating hate messages on social media and the fallout from a failed coup attempt on November 26, 2023, a coalition of former members from the Civil Defence Forces (Kamajors) in the Southeast region has taken a bold step to counter potential unrest and safeguard the nation’s stability.

On December 20, 2023, they announced their reorganization, citing a firm stance against coup plotters and Abdul W. Kamara, alias Adebayo, currently residing in Holland, who they hold accountable for disseminating hate messages.

The impetus for this reorganization stems from the urgent need to curb the alarming surge in hate messages, particularly those propagated by Adebayo across various social media platforms in Sierra Leone. These vitriolic messages have not only led to loss of life but have also sown seeds of division, posing a dire threat to national unity and security.

The recent failed coup, resulting in the tragic loss of serving security personnel, acted as a catalyst for the former Civil Defence Forces members to rally together. Recognizing the pressing need to protect the nation’s stability, they have chosen to intervene proactively.

Their collective aim revolves around actively monitoring and countering potential unrest instigated by coup plotters or those inciting division. Their primary objective is to ensure the safety and welfare of Sierra Leoneans and preserve the hard-earned peace the country has enjoyed in recent years.

Importantly, the reorganized group emphasizes that their efforts are not a call for vigilante justice. Instead, they intend to collaborate closely with relevant authorities, including the Office of National Security, the Sierra Leone Police, and the Armed Forces, to aid in identifying and apprehending those responsible for disseminating hate messages and orchestrating destabilizing activities.

A senior government official highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing underlying issues. Measures are underway to bolster security, closely monitor social media for hate speech, and strengthen collaboration between security agencies and community groups.

The government urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly. Unity against any attempts to disrupt the nation’s peace and stability is deemed crucial for Sierra Leone to continue its trajectory of progress.
