The Portee Community Development Association (PoCDA-SL) has expressed deep concern regarding ongoing technical challenges with the Lower Portee transformer, which has left the community without electricity since May 15, 2025.

The situation has prompted urgent calls for action from the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA).

According to reports confirmed to Sierraloaded, the transformer malfunctioned on May 15, leading to a complete shutdown of electricity supply in the area to prevent potential hazards.

The Portee community, primarily known for its fishing activities, has suffered significant losses due to the power outage. Without electricity, residents are unable to preserve their catch, leading to spoilage and financial hardship.

Jones lamented, “The locals have been at a huge loss, as there has been no electricity to keep their freezers cold for fish preservation, causing them a huge loss as their fishes get decayed every day.”

Mr. Christopher A. A. Jones, Chairman of PoCDA, stated that upon discovering the power outage, the executive team mobilized to visit the power station located at Wellington, near Old-Wharf Junction. There, they were informed that the authorities were aware of the issue and were directed to Blackhall Road for further assistance.

Mr. Jones asserted that a man called Mr. Mamoud, a technician at Blackhall Road, confirmed that the transformer’s fuse had blown, causing the malfunction, indicating that the transformer would be removed for further inspection to determine the cause of the recurring fuse failures.

He further confirmed to Sierraloaded that as of May 20, 2025, a delegation from PoCDA, including community stakeholders, Sheiks, and Imams, is scheduled to meet with Mr. Mamoud, the engineer responsible for the transformer.
