In a continued effort to bridge the gap between government and citizens, Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, led a high-level delegation to Tonkolili District over the weekend as part of his ongoing ‘Governance to the People’ campaign.
The initiative is designed to bring government closer to the people by engaging directly with communities, addressing their concerns, and ensuring effective governance.
Accompanied by three ministers and several heads of agencies and departments, Dr. Sengeh’s visit focused on overseeing various government and development partner projects, engaging with private sector stakeholders, and most importantly, listening to citizens in some of the country’s most remote and underserved areas.
The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of these visits, noting that it allows him and his team to “see, touch, feel, and experience what ordinary citizens go through on a regular basis.”
“Our engagement is rooted in the principle of radical inclusion,” Dr. Sengeh stated during the visit. “We reached the hardest-to-reach communities, listened to those who are most marginalized, and took immediate action to correct any injustices we witnessed.”
The ‘Governance to the People’ campaign also provides a platform for the Chief Minister and his team to assess the implementation of government policies and development projects firsthand.
By doing so, they can ensure that initiatives aimed at improving the lives of citizens are not only reaching those in urban areas but are also benefiting people in rural regions like Tonkolili.
During the visit, the delegation met with community leaders, local entrepreneurs, and residents, offering them an opportunity to voice their concerns and share their experiences with the government.
The Chief Minister assured the people that their feedback would be taken seriously and addressed promptly, underscoring his administration’s commitment to transparent and inclusive governance.
Dr. Sengeh’s ‘Governance to the People’ campaign is seen as a crucial step in strengthening trust between the government and its citizens, particularly in areas where access to services and resources has historically been limited.
By visiting these communities in person, the Chief Minister and his team aim to demonstrate that no one is left behind in the government’s development agenda.
