Nearly two years after professional engineers reportedly advised against construction at the busy junction of Siaka Stevens Street and Brook Street in central Freetown, concerns have resurfaced over the safety of a building owned by SV Electrical and Electronics opposite Ecobank.

A recent report published by Standard Times Newspaper, citing information from the Ministry of Works, stated that despite earlier warnings about the perceived insecurity of the location, the structure was constructed, allegedly posing a potential threat to members of the public within the area.

According to sources referenced in the report, the entire structure was said to have been poorly constructed, with claims that substandard materials were used by the engineering company awarded the contract.

When contacted, the management of SV Electrical and Electronics acknowledged concerns about the quality of the construction. The proprietor, a businessman widely known as Mr. SV, admitted that the building had been poorly executed by the engineers contracted for the project. However, he declined to disclose the names of the contractors responsible.

The businessman further explained that he personally informed the Ministry of Works and other relevant stakeholders about the alleged deficiencies in the construction and recommended that the building be demolished in the interest of public safety.

He stated that prior to commencing demolition, he held discussions with the contractors and decided that the exercise should be carried out at night to minimize potential danger to pedestrians and motorists in the busy commercial district. He expressed surprise at what he described as the manner in which the work had been undertaken.

Demolition of the structure is currently ongoing during nighttime hours, with the proprietor confirming that he is bearing the full financial cost of the exercise.

The Ministry of Works has yet to issue an official public statement detailing its position on the matter or any regulatory actions taken regarding the project.
