Sierra Leonean-Liberian musician Alonzo Teah Abasi has been released from custody after all charges related to drug trafficking were fully dropped and dismissed.

Representatives for the artist confirmed that Abasi was officially released yesterday following a “comprehensive review of the matter.” The dismissal of the charges brings an end to a four-month legal ordeal that began with a high-profile arrest at the Sierra Leone-Liberia border.

In a statement regarding his release, Abasi’s team emphasized that the outcome vindicates his long-standing claim of innocence. “Throughout the process, he remained cooperative and confident in the justice system’s ability to uncover the truth,” the statement read.

Abasi, also known as “Alonso Yeah,” was arrested by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) on August 7, 2025, at the Bo Waterside Port in Grand Cape Mount County.

At the time, LDEA authorities alleged that Abasi was involved in trafficking 844 grams of Methcathinone, a potent synthetic stimulant. The illicit substance, valued at approximately USD 8,440 (NLe 1.6 million), was reportedly discovered concealed in the rear door of a blue Nissan Primera during a routine vehicle inspection.

The LDEA had described the seizure as the first known attempt to introduce Methcathinone into the Liberian market.

Abasi was arrested alongside three other individuals: Sierra Leonean nationals Eariel Xavises Aweti and Samuel R. Grey, and Liberian national Matthew Sherman. The statement regarding Abasi’s release did not clarify the legal status of the other three suspects or whether charges against them have also been withdrawn.

The arrest had drawn significant public attention, particularly because Abasi is a well-known recording artist who has previously released music advocating for drug awareness and prevention.

Following his release, the musician expressed gratitude to his legal team and supporters, stating he intends to return to his professional commitments and family life.
