Following public criticism of his decision to stop producing political songs, Emmerson Bockarie, the Sierra Leonean singer renowned for his musics addressing social change and government corruption, has firmly stated that he will continue to sing, but not what his audience wants to hear.
Emmerson urged the public to seek out a replacement who can deliver the political songs they desire, reiterating that he will continue to make music that does not cater to their expectations for political themes. “I am done singing political songs now,” he affirmed.
In sharing his musical aspirations, he said, “We are giving glory to God, talking about social issues, not politics-related sounds. I have mentioned that several times; if you want me to keep saying it, I will, but it’s not happening. It is not out of arrogance, but for a lot of reasons I’m not going to mention.”
Following his recent statements, Emmerson had revealed that he received a message containing a strong warning. The sender cautioned him that if he continued producing the type of music he is known for, his name could be removed from the national conversation. Emmerson responded by apologizing and promised that his upcoming album would still connect with his Sierra Leonean fans.
He also disclosed that about 80% of his new album, Holy Water, will be aimed at his listeners in Sierra Leone, while the remaining 20% will target his international audience. However, he confirmed that the album will not include new songs addressing recent political or social issues.
